Letters from Nepal
Once upon a time, there was a little boy who lived in Nepal. His family was very humble. Their home had only two rooms: one for the parents and the other for the five children.
One day, a woman from a faraway country appeared. She was curious about the family’s life and made them an unusual request: she wanted to spend the night in their home.
At first, nobody understood.
“Why would this woman, from a wealthy country, want to sleep in our beds, eat our food, and live with us?”
The woman explained:
“I am a traveler, and I want to experience the real Nepal. Not a hotel prepared for tourists, but the true Nepal: to see it, to feel it, to smell it.”
A little confused but also excited, the family gave her the larger room and all squeezed together into the smaller one.
It turned out to be a wonderful time for both. The woman felt the warmth of the family, explored a Nepal hidden from tourists, and became part of their lives. The family, in turn, learned about other countries, new customs, and different ways of life. The bond that was forged during those days still remains strong.
Before leaving, the woman said:
“I want more people like me to experience this amazing country, just as you have shown it to me.”
And she helped them transform their home into a homestay: a place with all the necessary comforts, yet full of the authenticity and warmth of a real Nepali family.
My name is Babu, and I am that little boy, with a few more years under my belt. Today, together with my wife Belku and our two children, Ayuss and [second child’s name], we continue this project at our homestay in Kathmandu.
Many years have passed since then. Many travelers have stayed with us, and each has discovered the real Nepal, that hidden Nepal. We have welcomed every one of them as part of our family.
Every day, I write a newsletter with stories like this one. Real stories about my country, my family, my guests, my gods, and my traditions.
